Crafting Pope Francis' Chair: Tradition & Craft Combined
We are deeply honored to have been entrusted with creating the chair for Pope Francis during his visit to Indonesia for the joint Mass at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium. Despite the tight timeline, the process was an enriching experience for us, filled with pride and gratitude.
The project began with carefully selecting the finest teak wood, known for its durability and beauty. This choice was not only a practical one but also symbolic, representing Indonesias cultural richness. The true essence of the design came to life as we meticulously carved the wood, transforming it into a beautiful, functional piece.
The crown of the chair features intricate rose carvings, a symbol of beauty, love, and devotion. Roses have long been associated with the Virgin Mary, reminding us of her grace and maternal love. This detail connects the chair to Indonesian craftsmanship and the spiritual significance of the papacy.
Attention to detail was paramount throughout the process, ensuring that the chair adhered to the sacred traditions and standards of the Apostolic See. The dimensions and proportions were carefully calibrated to ensure the chair's alignment with the Church's liturgical requirements.
The backrest is made from plain white fabric, symbolizing purity and holiness. It prominently displays Pope Francis papal emblem along with the motto "Miserando Atque Eligendo""He looked at him with mercy and chose him." This phrase reflects the Popes ministry of compassion and inclusivity.
We incorporated the Batik Kawung motif, a traditional Indonesian design representing unity, harmony, and life cycle for the seat. This pattern holds cultural significance, symbolizing the collective spirit of mankind. The final layer of paint was applied to accentuate the teak's natural grain and enhance the carvings' beauty.
After the craftsmanship was completed, the chair underwent thorough quality control to ensure it met our exacting standards. Every detail was examined to ensure the chair's aesthetic appeal and maintain the highest levels of craftsmanship and symbolism.
This chair is more than just a piece of furniture. It represents the union of tradition, spirituality, and culture. Its design reflects the shared values of love, compassion, and faith. Its beauty and significance make it a meaningful addition to this special occasion and will serve as a lasting symbol of Pope Francis visit to Indonesia.
